xp corrupt cdrom drivers code 39

Had a weird problem lately after adding a know to be working dvd writer to my desktop. Installed the drive on the same ide cable as my existing drive set it up as salve (otherwise the bios didn’t recognize either drive) and then booted into windows. So far so good nothing i hadn’t done a thousand times before. Only when i got into windows the drives weren’t there, my computer was empty save for the hard drives, a quick look in the device manager and i found exclamation marks next to both drives each indicating a Code 39 error missing or corrupt driver. The problem with that is the driver for both drives was the one supplied by windows and i hadn’t done anything to corrupt it, tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drives through the device manager and manual’s setting the driver but each time they drives would not correctly install. Found the following registry hack by povmec on which did the trick, re-posted here for posterity.

Run REGEDIT, open up the following folders:
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

After clicking on {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} you should see two settings on the right-hand side:

Click on each of them, press DELETE and click YES.

Uninstall the defective hardware in device manager and then rescan h/w in device manager.

Drives should install correctly.
